Stallion Reproductive Services
Professional reproductive management for breeding stallionsA Guide for Stallion Owners
Whether your stallion is beginning his breeding career or is an established sire, a thorough reproductive evaluation and professional semen collection program are essential for maximising fertility and breeding success.
At Hawkesbury Equine Veterinary Centre, we offer comprehensive stallion reproductive services, including fertility assessments, fresh and chilled semen collection, frozen semen processing, and breeding soundness examinations.
Stallion Fertility Assessment
A stallion fertility assessment, also known as a Breeding Soundness Examination (BSE), evaluates a stallion's reproductive health and breeding potential.
This assessment provides valuable information before the breeding season, prior to purchasing a stallion, or when investigating reduced fertility.
A fertility assessment typically includes:
Complete physical examination
Examination of the external reproductive organs
Testicular measurement and evaluation
Assessment of libido and mating behaviour
Semen collection and laboratory analysis
Review of breeding history and previous fertility
Following the examination, your veterinarian will discuss the results and recommend an appropriate breeding management plan.
Semen Collection
Semen is collected using an artificial vagina (AV) while the stallion mounts either a phantom (dummy) mare or a teaser mare, depending on the stallion's training and experience.
Collection is performed in a safe, controlled environment by experienced veterinary staff and handlers.
Most stallions adapt quickly to the collection process after appropriate training.
Semen Evaluation
Immediately after collection, semen is assessed in our laboratory to determine its quality and suitability for breeding.
Each sample is evaluated for:
Semen volume
Sperm concentration
Progressive motility
Total sperm numbers
Sperm morphology (shape and structure)
Overall semen quality
These results help determine the most appropriate breeding method and the number of mares that may be inseminated from each collection.
Chilled Semen
Chilled semen allows stallions to breed mares located throughout Australia without travelling.
Following collection:
Semen is carefully diluted with specialised extenders.
The sample is slowly cooled.
It is packaged in insulated transport containers.
The semen is shipped overnight to the mare's veterinarian.
When properly processed and timed with ovulation, chilled semen provides excellent pregnancy rates.
Benefits include:
Reduced travel stress for stallions
Increased breeding opportunities
Access to mares across Australia
Efficient scheduling during the breeding season
Frozen Semen
Freezing semen allows valuable genetics to be preserved for future use.
Following collection, semen is:
Processed using specialised freezing extenders
Gradually cooled
Frozen in liquid nitrogen
Stored long-term in secure cryogenic storage
Frozen semen may remain viable for many years when stored correctly.
Benefits include:
Long-term genetic preservation
International breeding opportunities
Continued availability after retirement or death
Flexible breeding programs for mare owners
Not all stallions produce semen that freezes equally well, and specialised testing may be recommended before commencing a freezing program.
Why Freeze Semen?
Freezing semen may be recommended to:
Preserve valuable bloodlines
Protect fertility before illness or surgery
Support international breeding
Secure genetics before retirement from competition
Build a semen inventory for future breeding seasons
What Happens During Your Stallion's Visit?
1. Initial Examination
Your stallion receives:
General health assessment
Reproductive examination
Discussion of breeding goals
2. Semen Collection
Collection is performed using an artificial vagina in a safe and controlled environment.
Some stallions may require more than one collection depending on the purpose of the visit.
3. Laboratory Assessment
Every ejaculate undergoes detailed laboratory evaluation to assess fertility and determine the most appropriate processing method.
4. Semen Processing
Depending on your breeding goals, semen may be:
Used immediately
Prepared for chilled transport
Frozen and stored
Analysed as part of a fertility investigation
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the appointment take?
Most appointments take between 30 minutes and 2 hours, depending on the services required and the stallion's experience.
Can young stallions be assessed?
Yes. Young stallions can undergo fertility assessments before entering their first breeding season to establish baseline reproductive health.
Can frozen semen be stored long-term?
Yes. Frozen semen is stored in liquid nitrogen and may remain viable for many years when maintained under appropriate storage conditions.
What if my stallion has poor fertility?
Reduced fertility does not necessarily mean a stallion cannot breed successfully. Your veterinarian will investigate potential causes and discuss management strategies or treatment options where appropriate.
